		<description>Culture Sculpture

When creating a Cultural Probe this year, I had a specific age range in mind. The purpose of creating a kit for 11-14-year-olds was to observe their interest in making and see how the students visualized the concept of ‘culture.’

Culture sculpture is a workshop in which participants create an abstract sculpture using geometric and abstract pieces of acrylic, wood, and fabric that embodies a part of their culture. A small card describing what culture can embody and instructions were included in the kit. When assembling each kit I used abstract and geometric pieces of acrylic, wood, fabric in a multitude of colors except black or white. Having the students visualize culture outside of skin color was a goal. Interactivity was encouraged between the students to trade for pieces needed to complete their sculpture.

The engagement of the students depended on their age the older students appeared to be disinterested, while the younger students were fully engaged in making and creating their concept of culture. I even let some of my peers that had asked for a kit make sculptures from a leftover kit. They were more attentive than the younger students. From appearance, they used the experience as a creative, mindful break.

		<description>The Veldt
Visual Constructed LanguageThe goal of the assignment is to design a Constructed Language based on visual forms, compile a small dictionary of the language and use the language to narrate a story of your choice. My story was ‘The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury. I used 50’s techology ads for color and shape inspiration.

The final visual is four wooden boards with a mixture of acrylic, wood and paper pieces to recreate the flat printed version of the story.

If certain symptoms trigger the app’s AI, it will reach out to the patient and guide them through the app depending on their needs at the time.

While the patient continues to utilize the app, the AI learns more about the patient to cater to them personally. All data is heavily encrypted and sent to your doctor so you both can discuss during your next face-to-face appointment.&#38;nbsp;
The goal for the patient is to feel like they are not alone in improving their mental health and that their doctor is always with them when in need.&#38;nbsp;
Studies show one of the most difficult steps in mental healthcare is reaching out for help due to the stigma attached to multiple disorders. Care Team is a safe and judgment free zone to get a patient the correct help they need.</description>

		<description>Feel, Touch,
 Give, Take

Feel, Touch, Give, Take is a participatory piece to work against ennui. Feel works as a transmission of positive tokens. While symbolic, each piece of fiber is embedded with a participant’s happy memory. A user can pull a happy memory from the piece as a ‘token’ or ‘charm’ to carry with them for as long as needed, but the participant must leave a happy memory for another user in return. While the initial ptototype was the phrase ‘Feel Something’, I decided to keep it simple and employ the duality of the meaning of the word ‘Feel’ in its emotional and tactile senses.

The inspiration was from a small gesture from my own group therapy. Once a person was ‘finished’ with group therapy, they were given a small stone. Each person in the group would hold the stone and state a positive experience with the person leaving. My rock stays with me as a reminder that people care about my happiness and I care about theirs in return.

The Pratt Campaign: “Designers Sleep Out for Homeless Youth” was a peer-focus tested multimedia campaign, involving social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook), campus-based posters, a ‘disruptor’ with display box of “take me” campaign branded sleeping bags, a custom link to the national donor site, as well as e-mail blasts, tele-marketing, and grass-roots face-to-face marketing with prospective donors.

Pratt Sleep Out

Designing Sustainable Engagement

Overview: Students from Pratt Institute partnered with Covenant House NY, the nation’s

largest, privately funded institution providing a complete array of services to homeless and runaway youth.

Through research and immersion sessions with management at Covenant House, the class decided to participate in a nationwide event, Sleep Out America, as the most effective way to raise funds and awareness as well as engage in a series design, marketing, and sustainable initiatives to meet course requirements.

Results:

In a concentrated time frame – nine weeks to research, conceive and design; threeweeks to fundraise – the Pratt Sleep Out Team raised over $6,600 – 110% of their stated goal – and earned the honor of “Top Group” in the nation where fundraisers totaled 1,313 participants.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Trauma Dress
This project was an experimentation with materials and discursive design. Using a found pattern on the internet, I fabricated a dress using a delicate silk charmeuse fabric. Three panels of the fabric were printed with quotes from Judith Herman’s book Trauma and Recovery. The quotations follow the chronological timeline of trauma from its formal inception in the early 19th century through its evolutional impact on the male and predominantly female genders.

Without consent what is more untouchable than one’s body?

	Una Docena
de Roses
This book was heavily inspired by Mexican author Valeria Luiselli and her book Tell Me How it Ends. During the concept phase of this project and photographing materials, I intended to use within the layout, I spent several days reading and re-reading the book.

I decided to stick with the author’s format and use the first 12 questions addressed in the book. The book covers her time working for immigration as a translator for child immigrants that come to the U.S. alone and the 40 questions a child must answer on the initial form before they see a judge.
As a Mexican immigrant herself, she knew the details of the children’s arduous journey and just how much they were willing to risk to make it here to the states. Una Docena de Roses represents each question covered in the layout, and the roses represent the children. The delicate mortality of flora symbolizes the nurturing children need to thrive. The color red represents passion, blood, and sacrifice.

	Empathy is Free

Summer 2018 I took two courses, one in needlework and fabrication and another in neon bending. I also participated in a workshop with Martina Flor in hand lettering. Utilizing the word ‘empathy’ within multiple materiality contexts was my summer experiment in discourse creation. Beginning with hand-drawn lettering, I created a digital version to then produce a pattern for embroidery. Subsequently, I was able to use that pattern for my final neon bending project that was only a minor success due to my skill level in glass bending. However, it was essential for me to continue this exploration into how materials affect the implication of language.

		<description>Identity
 Sounds Like
Objects include much more than
the materials from which they are formed.
I believe that objects can contain value and meaning beyond monetary worth. This concept is something I have been experimenting this semester through making. There is the ideation, planning, prototyping, and reflection within almost every object I make. During reflection, so many avenues can be explored.
My first idea with this project was to create a ‘totem’ that expressed how society has evolved and the directions that lay before it. However, after sketching, I crafted a small prototype of chimes made out of wood. After feedback, a question of whether the final piece would represent me or a call to action creating awareness for multiple people was presented. Could the piece be an artifact that could be modified for multiple users?

A type system was created to encompass the full alphabet using a nine hole grid. The tile contains three 9 hole grids to use for initials. &#60;img width="2691" height="2691" width_o="2691" height_o="2691" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/397ce60c91f2dcf996576a448899b10c28ef64055c0670f540e72bfa6a508854/IMG_0831.JPG" data-mid="39750760" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/397ce60c91f2dcf996576a448899b10c28ef64055c0670f540e72bfa6a508854/IMG_0831.JPG" /&#62;I began by creating the support system with linen thread and a wooden ring. I went to the shop and wandered the aisles looking for a new material that I have not worked with before.
Ultimately, clay was the medium I chose. While making the rectangular tiles, I was still unsure of how I would alter them. After some time I thought about how each tile could represent a person that has shaped my identity in some fashion, and then I narrowed it further to include only women.
The first few tiles have no tails. I decided after that I liked the visual of the tails. Improvisation was also a factor in this artifact.
Once assembled, and with the tiles thoroughly dried it makes a nice hollow clinking sound when the tiles bump against each other.
I am working on a refined kit that will include the materials needed for a user to make their own identity chimes.
